limitations

Natural stones are formed by nature and therefore have some limitations. Different materials have different limitations. Examples of natural stone are marble, limestone, granite, travertine, slate, onyx and basalt. Sealing protects materials, even granites which are renowned for their hardness and durability will need sealing. Sealing not only helps protect the stone but in some cases enhances the colour. Many people believe that sealers prevent the stone from being damaged. Sealers normally only stop the ingress of water or liquids they consequently do not protect from scratching, etching and dull spots. Limestone and marbles are prone to etching, this is where the surface of the stone is etched away by the acidic content from natural and man-made products. Examples of products to be cautious of and most noteworthy are lemon's, beetroot, carrots, wines, champagnes and home cleaning products that have a bleaching agent in them. Sealers will not prevent etching. Some new products are being developed and are starting to creep into the market that will one day prevent etching. When this happens, it will be a game changer and will probably change the way marbles and limestones are used.

maintenance

For flooring it is advisable to use a dry micro fiber mop where possible, to reduce the risk of scratching.

When wet washing always use an acid-free product! Allow the floor to dry thoroughly during the first 3 to 6 months. During this period it is important to use only a small amount of water to mop the floor and allow the surplus moisture to evaporate from the tiles; also use a product that does not seal the pores of the stone (e.g. Lithofin MN Easy Care Cleaner). This product is always added to the wash water and can be used for future
regular cleaning.

sealing

When the finished surface is completely dry, sensitive areas can be protected with a suitable sealer
(e.g. Lithofin MN Stain Stop).
