We recommend the use of Marmox tile backer boards when tiling onto walls and floors.

Marmox board is made from extruded polystyrene embedded in a cement polymer mortor, this is highly waterproof and has high thermal insulation making it ideal with underfloor heating ensuring the room heats up quickly, and reducing heat loss by upto 60%. Marmox board can hold a tile weight of 62kg/m2 making it suitable for slab and stone tiling work.

Marmox Board Wall Installation

This system applies to clean, sound brick, block or concrete walls. This advice is intended for general guidance and greater detail can be obtained by consulting the relevant product data or contacting the manufacturers of the materials used.

Adhesive Dabs – For uneven wall surfaces

The Marmox Construction board (minimum thickness 20mm) is cut to length. The Ardex-Flex 5000/5001 or similar adhesive, is applied to the wall surface to provide perimeter strips or dabs of adhesive to receive the Marmox Construction board. Whilst the adhesive is still fresh and moist the Marmox Construction board is placed on the wall and, using a timber batten, thoroughly beaten in to ensure good all round contact and a true surface. All joints between the boards should be sealed during fixing of the boards using Silicone Sealant. The sealant should be applied to the edge of the fixed board immediately prior to the next board being installed and placed in position, thus creating a waterproof joint. When this adhesive has set, but not necessarily dried, the tiles can be fixed with a flexible tile adhesive such as Ardex X77, Mapei Keraquick or similar flexible adhesive.

Thin Bed Adhesive – Flat wall surface

The Ardex-Flex 5000/5001 or similar adhesive, is applied either to the existing sound wall surface or directly to the Marmox Construction board (minimum thickness 6mm) and combed out with a 8mm x 8mm toothed and notched trowel over the complete board area to provide a ribbed adhesive bed. The board is then offered up to the wall surface and tapped up true. The boards are butt jointed and all joints should be sealed with Silicone Sealant, as previously described.

Marmox Board Tiling

The tiles should be bedded on the Marmox Construction boards once the flexible adhesive securing the boards to the wall has set and hardened adequately. The tiles should be fixed using Ardex-Flex 5000/5001 or similar flexible adhesive. Note that in wet areas the tiles should be fixed using the thin solid bed fixing technique to ensure no voids are left behind the tiles. Once the tile bed has hardened sufficiently, the joints between the tiles can be grouted with either the appropriate cement-based grout. Movement joints in the tile bed e.g. between adjacent walls, should be sealed with a suitable sealant.

Stud Partition Walling

This system uses timber or metal studding that should be designed to provide rigid support for the Marmox Construction board. This advice is intended for general guidance and greater detail can be obtained by consulting the relevant product data or by contacting the manufacturers of the materials used.

FRAMEWORK LAYOUT (A) – (Maximum batten centers 300mm).

The minimum thickness of Marmox Construction board suitable for such a layout is 10mm. (Maximum unsupported span 300mm). All board edges must be supported.

FRAMEWORK LAYOUT (B) – (Maximum batten centers 600mm).

The minimum thickness of Marmox Construction board suitable for such a layout is 20mm. (Maximum unsupported span 600mm).

Marmox Board Wall Installation

Marmox Construction board is fixed to the framework using stainless steel screws and washers. These are fixed at 300mm centers. The fixings must be a minimum of 30mm from the edge of the Marmox Construction board. The screw washer fixing is tightened up to the board’s surface. The washer is then driven flush to the board surface using a rubber headed mallet and the screw re-tightened. All joints between the boards should be sealed during fixing of the boards using Silicone Sealant. The sealant should be applied to the edge of the fixed board immediately prior to the next board being installed and placed in position, thus creating a waterproof joint. When this adhesive has set, but not necessarily dried, the tiles can be fixed with Ardex-Flex 5000/5001 or similar flexible adhesive.

Marmox Board Tiling

The ceramic tiles should be fixed using Ardex-Flex 5000/5001 or similar flexible adhesive. Note that in wet areas the tiles should be fixed using the thin solid bed fixing technique to ensure no voids are left behind the tiles, a suitable adhesive would be Ardex X77. Once the tile bed has hardened sufficiently, the joints between the tiles can be grouted with the appropriate cement-based grout. The movement joints in the tile bed between adjacent walls should be sealed with a suitable sealant.
